Renowned Vietnamese pianist Dang Thai Son to perform in May

Winner of the Gold Medal at the 10th International Chopin Piano Competition in Warsaw, Poland, and the first Asian pianist to win this prize, Dang will play masterpieces by Schubert, Chopin, Paderewski and Liszt. The recital will be staged at 8pm on May 26 (Saturday) at the Concert Hall of Hong Kong City Hall.
Born in Hanoi, Vietnam, Dang began studying piano with his mother, Thai Thi Lien, who was the piano department head at the music conservatory now known as the Vietnam National Academy of Music, at the age of 6. Local music critic Savio Lau praised Deng as blessed with superb musicality and technicality, adding that his glamorous and vivacious style is an ingenious blend of simplicity and depth. The award-winning pianist has played in more than 40 countries with world-class orchestras, including the St Petersburg Philharmonic Orchestra, Orchestre Symphonique de Montreal, Philharmonia Orchestra, BBC Philharmonic, Orchestre de Paris and Czech Philharmonic.
At a concert held in Warsaw in 1999 to commemorate the 150th anniversary of the death of Chopin, Dang was the only non-Polish artist invited to perform with the Warsaw National Opera Theatre Orchestra. More recently, he has been invited three times consecutively to sit on the judging panel of the International Chopin Piano Competition in Warsaw, where he was also vice-chairman of the panel in 2015.

A pre-concert talk entitled "Dang Thai Son - A War Time Pianist" (to be conducted in Cantonese) will be held at 6.45pm at the North Committee Room, 7/F, High Block, Hong Kong City Hall.
