Forty-four citizens commended for helping police fight crime (with photos)
**************************************************************************
Forty-four citizens who helped the Police fight crime were commended at the Good Citizen Award (GCA) Presentation Ceremony today (March 21).

Speaking at the presentation ceremony, Police Director of Operations, Mr Tang Ping-keung, pointed out that Hong Kong’s overall crime figures in 2017 decreased to a record-low since 1975. It was a result of the efforts made by the Police and support from the public. He believed that citizens were willing to join hands with the Police to fight crime and safeguard the city. He commended the GCA recipients for their courage, alertness and willingness to help.

Mr Tang thanked the Hong Kong General Chamber of Commerce for sponsoring this meaningful programme, which encourages citizens to report crime and stand up for justice. He also thanked the Fight Crime Committee and the 18 District Fight Crime Committee for their contributions in the fight against crime.

With the help of the awardees, more than 30 persons were arrested for offences including telephone deception, theft, robbery, indecent assault and trafficking in a dangerous drug.

Four of this year’s awardees also received the Good Citizen of the Year Award (GCYA) 2017. Mr Chan Tsz-hin, Ms Fung Ka-yan, Mr Heung Yuk-tong and Mr Yip Siu-leung helped the police arrest a man who robbed with a knife at Hong Kong International Airport in November 2016. Witnessing the man robbed a currency exchange shop with a knife, they reported the crime and followed the man from behind. The Police swiftly arrested the man with the information provided by the winners. The man was convicted of robbery and was sentenced to five years and four months’ imprisonment.

The eldest awardee of the phase, Mr Lau Hon-lun, gave a chase with the Police after a man who robbed a handbag. The man was convicted of robbery and sentenced to 48 months’ imprisonment.

The youngest awardee, Mr Khan M Hanif, intercepted a man who stole a handbag and helped the victim to recover her properties. The man was convicted of theft and sentenced to six months’ imprisonment.

Presented twice a year, the Award is organised by the Police Public Relations Branch and sponsored by the Hong Kong General Chamber of Commerce. Each of the awardees receives a certificate and a cheque of $3,000. Each of the GCYA winners was also presented with a plaque and a cheque of $4,000. More than 4,000 persons have been commended over the years.
