HKETO Berlin at Austrian education fair BeSt (with photos)
**********************************************************
The Hong Kong Economic and Trade Office, Berlin (HKETO Berlin) hosted a booth at the Austrian education fair BeSt in Vienna to inform around 75 000 visitors from Austria, the Czech Republic, Hungary and the Slovak Republic about the exciting study opportunities that Hong Kong has to offer. The fair, jointly organised by the Austrian Federal Ministry for Education, Science and Research and the Austrian Public Employment Service, was held from March 1 to 4. The Deputy Director of HKETO Berlin, Miss Alison Lo, gave a presentation on March 4 (Vienna time) about the unique advantages of studying in Hong Kong and the valuable living and working experience offered through the Working Holiday Scheme between Hong Kong and Austria.

“Hong Kong is an international, modern and dynamic city with a thriving economy right in the heart of Asia where the East meets the West,” Miss Lo said when presenting Hong Kong’s advantages. “Hong Kong is home to some of the world’s top 50 universities. We welcome students around the world to study and work in our city,” she added. Miss Lo also highlighted the excellent research opportunities in Hong Kong supported by the HK$ 23 billion (EUR 2.4 billion) Research Endowment Fund.

Hong Kong’s post-secondary education institutions offer a variety of high quality programmes, which are internationally recognised. Hong Kong’s programmes are taught in English, and the universities adopt international standards in curriculum design as well as quality assurance. Hong Kong universities also offer some of the world’s best business administration and executive business management programmes. Of the 20 local degree-awarding institutions in Hong Kong, four are ranked in the world’s top 50 by the Quacquarelli Symonds University Rankings 2018 and three are ranked in Asia’s top 10 by the Times Higher Education Asia University Rankings 2018.

To experience Hong Kong first-hand, young people from Austria can also make use of the Working Holiday Scheme. Under the Scheme, young people from Austria between the age of 18 and 30 can stay up to 12 months in Hong Kong and are allowed to take up short-term employment as well as enrol in study or training courses as an incidental part of their stay so as to acquire a better understanding of the cultural, economic and social developments in Hong Kong.

To attract outstanding non-local students to study in Hong Kong, the Government offers several scholarship opportunities. Among them, the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region Government Scholarship Fund offers HK$ 80, 000 (about EUR 8, 300) per year for each scholarship awardee, and the Hong Kong PhD Fellowship Scheme provides an annual stipend of HK$ 240, 000 (about EUR 24, 900) and a conference and research-related travel allowance of HK$ 10, 000 (about EUR 1, 000) per year to each awardee for a period of up to three years.
