Lunar New Year lantern carnival opens at Hong Kong Cultural Centre Piazza tonight (with photos)
******************************************************************************************
The Leisure and Cultural Services Department (LCSD) opened the Urban Lunar New Year Lantern Carnival at the Hong Kong Cultural Centre Piazza tonight (March 2) in celebration of the Lunar New Year Lantern Festival. The carnival is enhancing the festive mood for visitors with its spectacular lantern displays and a variety of entertainment.

Colourful lanterns are lighting up the piazza, providing popular spots for photo-taking and creating a joyful ambience. The highlights include three colourful and majestic southern lions in the Foshan, Heshan and "Fo-He" styles which were crafted by local masters, showing the craftsmanship of traditional lantern making. This lantern display will continue until March 6.

Another thematic display entitled "Happily the Fishes Leap!", which runs until March 4, showcases nearly 90 lanterns of koi in different colours and patterns to offer members of the public blessings of joy, abundance and success.

Carnival-goers are also enjoying a series of performances and activities including spectacular ethnic songs, dance, acrobatics and other music performances. Demonstrations of Chinese crafts such as the creation of embroidered shoes, "big-head" Buddha masks, minibus plates and galvanised iron work by local masters are being equally well received.

There will also be lantern carnivals at Tung Chung North Park tomorrow (Saturday) and Hong Kong Velodrome Park in Tseung Kwan O on March 4 (Sunday) from 7.30pm to 10pm.
