Bottled dessert sauce sample detected with preservative exceeding legal limit
*****************************************************************************
The Centre for Food Safety (CFS) of the Food and Environmental Hygiene Department today (December 28) announced that a sample of bottled raspberry dessert sauce was found to contain a preservative, sorbic acid, at a level exceeding the legal limit. The CFS is following up on the case.

     Product details are as follows:

Product name: REALLY RASPBERRY SAUCE
Brand: M&S
Place of origin: United Kingdom
Distributor: Marks and Spencer (Asia Pacific) Limited
Net weight: 280 grams
Best before date: January 31, 2018

A spokesman for the CFS said, "The CFS collected the above-mentioned sample from a store of the distributor in Tsing Yi for testing under its regular Food Surveillance Programme. The test result showed that the sample contained sorbic acid at a level of 1 430 parts per million (ppm), exceeding the legal limit of 1 000 ppm."

The CFS has informed the vendor concerned of the irregularity and instructed it to stop sale and remove from shelves the affected batch of the product. The CFS is also tracing the source of the product concerned.

The spokesman said, "Sorbic acid is a preservative of low-toxicity. Based on the level detected in the abovementioned sample, adverse health effects will not be caused by usual consumption."

The spokesman reminded the food trade that the use of preservatives in food must comply with the Preservatives in Food Regulation (Cap 132BD). Offenders are liable to a maximum fine of $50,000 and six months' imprisonment upon conviction.

The CFS will inform the trade, continue to follow up on the case and take appropriate action.
