CSD video of family broken up by drug trafficking (with photos)
***************************************************************
The upcoming winter solstice (December 22) is a traditional time for families to reunite and have dinner together. However, a 10-year-old girl is unable to enjoy a festive meal with her parents because they have both been sentenced to more than 10 years' imprisonment for drug trafficking.

The Correctional Services Department (CSD) today (December 17) released a video about a couple, Ah Chun (false name) and Mickey (false name), who are serving their sentences at Stanley Prison and Lo Wu Correctional Institution respectively. Now in separate locations, they both feel regret and sorrow for not being able to look after their daughter.

When they were first admitted, both Ah Chun and Mickey found it hard to adapt to life in prison, especially due to their long sentences. Having lost their goals and direction for the future, they felt lost and negative towards life.

A breakthrough came eventually when Mickey received a hand-made card and a photograph from her daughter. Seeing that her daughter was growing up, she decided to face her mistakes positively. Mickey is now studying a university distance learning course so she has more topics to share with her daughter. Mickey also wants her daughter to know that her mother is studying hard, and keeps in contact with her as she grows up.

Meanwhile, Ah Chun receives appropriate rehabilitation counselling from staff of the Rehabilitation Unit. They also encouraged him to apply for the visit scheme for persons in custody of different institutions, which allows him and his wife to meet so they can see and support each other. Ah Chun has also started doing business studies.

Drugs have broken up Mickey and Ah Chun's family. With Christmas just around the corner, anyone facing the temptation of taking up drug use or drug trafficking should think twice about the consequences, both for yourself and your family.

Members of the public are welcome to watch the video about Ah Chun and Mickey, which has been uploaded onto the CSD YouTube Channel at www.youtube.com/user/hongkongcsd.
