Director of Housing praises volunteers for caring for elderly tenants (with photos)
***********************************************************************************
The Director of Housing, Mr Stanley Ying, commended Housing Department volunteers for their dedication to voluntary work and bringing warmth to elderly tenants residing in public rental housing at the 20th anniversary celebration of the Housing Department Volunteers Corps (Volunteers Corps) today (December 9).

"It is commendable that for the past 20 years, colleagues as well as their family members have spent their weekends on voluntary service by organising events or home visits for elderly tenants residing in public rental housing. They are not only committed to serving the community, but are also willing to give their spare time to help elderly tenants and bring them joy and care," Mr Ying said.

The Volunteers Corps held an anniversary celebration this morning. Members of the Volunteers Corps then separated into two groups. One group of Volunteers Corps members joined about 100 elderly tenants from Kwai Chung I Estate in a gathering at Asbury Methodist Social Service in Kwai Chung. Apart from organising singing and djembe performances, the Volunteers Corps also arranged a health talk, blood pressure measurement and photo-taking for the elderly tenants. The other group at the same time conducted home visits to those who could not join the event and presented them with lucky bags and gifts.

The Volunteers Corps has 238 members today, compared to 22 at its inception. The members show care for elderly tenants residing in public housing estates, and usually visit elderly tenants or organise celebratory activities for them during major festivals. Currently they organise around 10 events each year to share happiness with elderly tenants.
