Rare and inspiring African theatrical experiences to be presented at Kwai Tsing Theatre this weekend (with photos)
******************************************************************************************
The award-winning Kenyan play "A Man Like You" and the innovative interactive theatre work "Strelitzia" will be staged respectively inside and outside the Kwai Tsing Theatre this weekend, offering audiences uncommon African theatrical experiences. The productions are part of the programmes of the World Cultures Festival 2017 - Vibrant Africa.

In "A Man Like You", the Theatre Company from Kenya shines a spotlight on a global power struggle beyond the headlines between a British diplomat and his Somali kidnapper. In a battle of wills and worldviews over 88 days, the duo go through an intensely rewarding exploration of idealism, extremism, religion and politics, engaging in a series of heated debates and thought-provoking conversations that hurtle to the heart of cultural stereotyping and identity. As boundaries between hostage-taker and victim start to blur, the prejudices of the past begin to disappear.

The production examines critical real-world issues through the dramatic power of the stage to humanise different perspectives. The play won Best Tragedy in Kenya's Sanaa Theatre Awards.

"Strelitzia", a participatory play-cum-installation by Poedio Productions from Nigeria, will offer audiences another theatrical experience outside the theatre in a marquee set up at the Kwai Tsing Theatre Plaza. The work will lead them to a multi-sensory diary of self-discovery through a journey into the public and private history of the Nigerian people. Guided by different performers through various partitioned spaces, audience members will be able to experience the storytelling tradition of African theatre. They will encounter memorabilia, music, dance and poetry that bring out inner emotions and revelatory memories from their own lives, engage in social reflection, and open the way to personal soul-searching and healing.
