S for IT visits Yuen Long District (with photos)
************************************************
The Secretary for Innovation and Technology, Mr Nicholas W Yang, visited Yuen Long District today (October 30) to take a look at the participation in scientific research activities by secondary students. He also held a meeting with members of the Yuen Long District Council (YLDC) and visited a hydraulic technology company at Yuen Long Industrial Estate.

Accompanied by the Vice Chairman of the YLDC, Mr Wong Wai-shun, and District Officer (Yuen Long), Mr Edward Mak, Mr Yang went to Pak Kau College where he met teaching staff and students. In addition to being one of the eight partner schools under the Enriched IT Class Programme, Pak Kau College also provides STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics) education for all Secondary One to Two students to acquire skills in coding, minecraft and 3D printing technology. This helps to cultivate the students' interest in STEM as well as enabling them to apply STEM knowledge in their everyday lives and enhancing their logical thinking and problem-solving skills.

Arrangements were also made by the Yuen Long District Secondary School Heads Association for students actively participating in scientific research activities to join a sharing session and present their winning entries and outstanding results from various competitions. These include a mathematics educational card system which won the first place in the Games in Development Competition of the ECGBL Educational Game Competition held in Austria in early October, and winning entries in the China Adolescents Science and Technology Innovation Contest. The four schools involved are Pak Kau College, Jockey Club EduYoung College, Shun Tak Fraternal Association Yung Yau College and Ju Ching Chu Secondary School (Yuen Long).

At the sharing session, Mr Yang encouraged the students to seize the opportunities to learn and actively participate in STEM activities and competitions so as to broaden their knowledge and widen their exposure.  While Hong Kong has geared up for boosting the development of innovation and technology, STEM literacy can support Hong Kong's transition to a knowledge-based economy.

Mr Yang then attended a meeting with YLDC members to gain a better understanding of the district’s development. They also exchanged views on the development of the Hong Kong-Shenzhen Innovation and Technology Park in the Lok Ma Chau Loop as well as innovation and technology issues of mutual concern.

Before concluding the district visit, Mr Yang visited a hydraulic technology company with production line and R&D centre at the Yuen Long Industrial Estate. The company specialises in developing and manufacturing hydraulic operating mechanism, multi-channel valves and oil pressure vibration dampers for use in high-speed railway. It also rides on the Mainland and Hong Kong Closer Economic Partnership Arrangement (CEPA) to gain access to the Mainland market.

Mr Yang said that the 300 per cent super tax deduction announced in the Chief Executive’s 2017 Policy Address would stimulate investment by private enterprises on R&D. Together with the $500 million Technology Talent Scheme which provides funding support for enterprises to recruit postdoctoral talent and train staff on advanced manufacturing technologies, especially those related to Industry 4.0, the policies will drive re-industrialisation and foster high value-added development in Hong Kong, he added.
