London ETO promotes Hong Kong films at London East Asia Film Festival 2017 (with photos)
****************************************************************************************
The Hong Kong Economic and Trade Office, London (London ETO) is promoting Hong Kong film culture in London by sponsoring the London East Asia Film Festival (LEAFF) 2017.

The LEAFF 2017 has selected four Hong Kong films as part of a special programme marking the 20th anniversary of the establishment of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region under the title "Hong Kong: Now and Then". The programme opened with Andrew Lau and Alan Mak's double-crossing police narrative "Infernal Affairs" (2002, remade by Hollywood as "The Departed") in the afternoon on October 21 (London time). There was also a special in-competition screening of Hong Kong director Derek Tsang's movie "Soul Mate" (2016), which was followed by a question-and-answer session with the director in the evening on October 21 (London time). The other films shown were Johnnie To's "Election 2" (2006) and Herman Yau's "Shock Wave" (2017).

Speaking at the opening gala screening for the LEAFF 2017 on October 19 (London time) at Odeon Leicester Square, London, the Director-General of the London ETO, Ms Priscilla To, highlighted Hong Kong's success in filmmaking. "It is our great pleasure to work together with the LEAFF again this year to bring over some of the best Hong Kong productions in the past 20 years to movie lovers in London.

"Over the past 20 years, under the successful implementation of the 'one country, two systems' principle, Hong Kong continues to thrive as an international business and financial centre. Yet we all know that Hong Kong is not only about business.  Over the years we have developed into a leading arts and culture hub in the region. In particular, the Hong Kong film industry has gained a global reputation over the years," Ms To said.

London ETO and the LEAFF 2017 jointly hosted a reception after the screening of "Infernal Affairs" on October 21 (London time) at a café in London that has its design and operation modelled on the traditional-Hong Kong style café.  Director Derek Tsang also attended the reception, sharing with the guests stories about Hong Kong filmmaking, while the guests were having a taste of Hong Kong-style food and drinks.

The LEAFF 2017 will close on October 29 (London time). The LEAFF was established in 2015 to support and promote in London the filmmaking of East Asia. The film event was officially launched in 2016, during which 40 films were screened over 11 days at venues across central London, ending with the Hong Kong film "Three", directed by renowned Hong Kong director Johnnie To, as the closing gala film.
