Establishment and re-alignment of principal fairways proposed
*************************************************************
The Government proposes to amend the Shipping and Port Control Regulations (Cap. 313A) to establish three new principal fairways in North Lantau and re-align the boundaries of four existing principal fairways in Victoria Harbour.

Arising from the re-alignment of fairway boundaries, the Merchant Shipping (Local Vessels) (General) Regulation (Cap. 548F) will also be amended to align the boundaries of the speed limit zones with those of the re-aligned principal fairways.

A spokesman for the Transport and Housing Bureau said, "In view of the increasing marine traffic around North Lantau and in Victoria Harbour, the amendments are necessary to regulate vessel movements and enhance navigation safety."

The Legislative Council Panel on Economic Development, the Port Operations Committee, the Local Vessels Advisory Committee, the Pilotage Advisory Committee and the High Speed Craft Consultation Committee have been consulted. Most members supported the legislative proposals on the grounds of enhanced marine safety.

The proposed amendments were gazetted today (October 20) and will be tabled at the Legislative Council on October 25 for negative vetting.
