World-class Philharmonia Quartett Berlin to perform in November

     The world-renowned Philharmonia Quartett Berlin will give a long-awaited concert for Hong Kong audiences in November.

     Comprising Daniel Stabrawa (violin), Christian Stadelmann (violin), Neithard Resa (viola) and Dietmar Schwalke (cello), the quartet will play Mozart's "String Quartet No. 8 in F", Beethoven's "String Quartet No. 15 in A Minor" and Schumann's "String Quartet No. 3 in A".

     The Philharmonia Quartet Berlin was founded in 1985 by the concertmaster, the second violin section leader and musicians of the Berliner Philharmoniker, and made its debut at London's Wigmore Hall. The ensemble has since had a critically acclaimed career, establishing itself among the world's premier string quartets with more than 30 years of international concerts and a large and diverse discography. An extensive concert calendar has taken the ensemble to destinations throughout Europe, North and South America and Asia.

     The Philharmonia Quartett Berlin appears regularly at the world's most prestigious concert halls and international festivals. In 2006, the quartet was invited by Pope Benedict XVI to perform a private concert at the Vatican. The Spanish Royal Family invites the ensemble regularly to the Palacio Real to play on the royal Stradivari instruments. The quartet has thrilled audiences throughout the world with its incredible artistry, in particular gaining international attention for its performances of Beethoven and Shostakovich cycles in the Berliner Philharmonie.

     "Encore Series: Philharmonia Quartett Berlin" is presented by the Leisure and Cultural Services Department. It will be held at 8pm on November 19 (Sunday) at the Concert Hall of Hong Kong City Hall. Tickets priced at $160, $220, $280 and $340 are now available at URBTIX (www.urbtix.hk).      A pre-concert talk entitled "Classical and Romantic Austro-German String Quartets" (to be conducted in Cantonese) will be held at 6.45pm at the North Committee Room, 7/F, High Block, Hong Kong City Hall. The speaker will be Ernest Wan. Admission is free with limited seats available on a first-come, first-served basis.
