AI Chinese Chess Fun Day with Masters inspires students on innovation and technology (with photos)

     ​About 120 primary and secondary students gathered today (October 7) at the AI Chinese Chess Fun Day with Masters to learn about Chinese chess artificial intelligence (AI) systems and gear up for the Chinese Chess Challenge "1K VS AI" Battle Day to be held in late October through seminars and practice.
      
     Organised by the Office of the Government Chief Information Officer, the AI Chinese Chess Fun Day with Masters was one of the lead-in programmes for the Chinese Chess Challenge "1K VS AI". At the event today, the students received a clear introduction on the applications of AI by an information technology expert and were enlightened on strategic moves in battling against AI systems as well as given guidance by chess masters through practice on-site.
      
     The Government Chief Information Officer, Mr Allen Yeung, also took part in a chess challenge against an AI system with the students. He said he hoped that the event could strengthen students' understanding of AI applications. He also encouraged them to get more involved in STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics) activities and not to restrict their pursuit of technology to classes.
      
     Apart from the Fun Day, two workshops named AI Knowledge Enlightening Tour were also held for primary and secondary students in August and September. Visits to various innovation and technology institutes were arranged. The students also learnt coding for applications with AI and machine learning functions from AI experts.
      
     The finale of the Chinese Chess Challenge "1K VS AI" will be the Battle Day to be held on October 27. Some 1 000 students will attempt to set a world record for "The Most People Battling against an Artificial Intelligence Chinese Chess System on the Spot Simultaneously" while competing for championships in the primary and secondary categories.
