A kind of French milk cheese suspected to be contaminated with salmonella
*************************************************************************
The Centre for Food Safety (CFS) of the Food and Environmental Hygiene Department today (September 11) announced that a kind of pasteurised milk cheese imported from France is suspected to have been contaminated with salmonella, a pathogen. The trade should stop using or selling the product concerned immediately if they possess it.

Details of the product are as follows:

Product name: Saint Nectaire Laitier
Brand: Dischamp
Place of origin: France
Importer: Culina (HK) Ltd
Lot numbers: Lot 7212132 and Lot 7213131
Use-by date: November 30, 2017

"The Centre received a notification from the Rapid Alert System for Food and Feed (RASFF) of the European Commission that the above-mentioned product is under recall because it was suspected to have been contaminated with salmonella. According to the information provided by the RASFF, some of the affected product might have been imported into Hong Kong," a spokesman for the CFS said.

The CFS immediately contacted Culina (HK) Ltd, the importer concerned in Hong Kong as notified by the RASFF, for follow-up. According to the information provided by the importer concerned, a total of two pieces of the above affected product (weighing about 3.35 kilograms in total) had been imported and distributed to a restaurant. In its follow-up investigation with the restaurant concerned, the Centre learnt that the affected product has not been used and will be returned to the importer for disposal according to the CFS' instructions.

"Salmonella infection may cause fever and gastrointestinal upset such as vomiting, abdominal pain and diarrhoea. The effects on infants, young children, the elderly and patients with a weak immune system could be more severe and sometimes may even lead to death," the spokesman said.

The CFS will continue to closely monitor the case and take appropriate follow-up action.
