Statistics on vessels, port cargo and containers for second quarter of 2017

In the second quarter of 2017, total port cargo throughput increased by 11.1% compared with a year earlier to 69.7 million tonnes. Within this total, inward port cargo increased by 20.7% compared with a year earlier to 43.9 million tonnes, while outward port cargo decreased by 2.1% to 25.9 million tonnes.
For the first half of 2017, total port cargo throughput increased by 14.8% compared with a year earlier to 135.9 million tonnes. Within this total, inward and outward port cargo increased by 22.1% and 4.7% compared with a year earlier to 83.8 million tonnes and 52.1 million tonnes respectively.
On a seasonally adjusted quarter-to-quarter comparison, total port cargo throughput decreased by 2.2% in the second quarter of 2017. Within this total, inward port cargo increased by 2.3%, while outward port cargo decreased by 9.0%. The seasonally adjusted series enables more meaningful shorter-term comparison to be made for discerning possible variations in trends.
Port cargo
Within port cargo, seaborne and river cargo increased by 15.6% and 3.2% in the second quarter of 2017 compared with a year earlier to 46.3 million tonnes and 23.4 million tonnes respectively.
Within inward port cargo, imports and inward transhipment increased by 25.2% and 15.5% in the second quarter of 2017 compared with a year earlier to 24.5 million tonnes and 19.4 million tonnes respectively. For outward port cargo, exports (including domestic exports and re-exports) decreased by 26.1% compared with a year earlier to 8.1 million tonnes, while outward transhipment increased by 15.0% to 17.7 million tonnes.
Within port cargo, seaborne and river cargo increased by 18.1% and 8.9% in the first half of 2017 compared with a year earlier to 89.0 million tonnes and 46.9 million tonnes respectively.
Within inward port cargo, imports and inward transhipment increased by 24.6% and 19.1% in the first half of 2017 compared with a year earlier to 47.0 million tonnes and 36.8 million tonnes respectively. For outward port cargo, exports decreased by 10.7% compared with a year earlier to 18.0 million tonnes, while outward transhipment increased by 15.1% to 34.0 million tonnes.
The detailed port cargo statistics are summarised in Table 1.
The main countries/territories of loading of inward port cargo and countries/territories of discharge of outward port cargo are shown in Table 2 and Table 3 respectively.
Comparing the second quarter of 2017 with the second quarter of 2016, double-digit increases were recorded in the tonnage of inward port cargo loaded in Indonesia (+97.1%), the mainland of China (+24.1%), Thailand (+16.3%), Singapore (+15.2%), Taiwan (+12.6%), Vietnam (+12.2%), Japan (+11.5%) and Malaysia (+11.1%). For outward port cargo, double-digit increases were recorded in the tonnage of outward port cargo discharged in Korea (+53.2%), Malaysia (+28.5%), Taiwan (+28.2%) and Japan (+16.6%). On the other hand, double-digit decreases were recorded in the tonnage of outward port cargo discharged in Macao (-40.9%) and the Philippines (-14.4%).
Comparing the first half of 2017 with the first half of 2016, double-digit increases were recorded in the tonnage of inward port cargo loaded in Indonesia (+47.0%), Singapore (+26.9%), Thailand (+23.7%), the mainland of China (+21.5%), Taiwan (+21.2%), Vietnam (+20.4%) and Malaysia (+16.2%). For outward port cargo, double-digit increases were recorded in the tonnage of outward port cargo discharged in Korea (+48.9%), Taiwan (+31.0%), Japan (+15.0%), Vietnam (+14.9%) and Malaysia (+14.8%). On the other hand, a double-digit decrease was recorded in the tonnage of outward port cargo discharged in the Philippines (-11.8%).
The principal commodities of inward and outward port cargo are shown in Table 4 and Table 5 respectively.
Comparing the second quarter of 2017 with the second quarter of 2016, double-digit increases were recorded in the tonnage of inward port cargo of "stone, sand and gravel" (+70.5%), "coal, coke and briquettes" (+55.8%) and "logs and timber; wood, simply worked" (+48.0%). As for outward port cargo, double-digit changes were recorded in the tonnage of "logs and timber; wood, simply worked" (+40.3%), "pulp and waste paper" (+34.7%), "metalliferous ores and metal scrap" (+22.0%) and "stone, sand and gravel" (-47.1%).
Comparing the first half of 2017 with the first half of 2016, double-digit increases were recorded in the tonnage of inward port cargo of "stone, sand and gravel" (+61.4%), "logs and timber; wood, simply worked" (+50.7%), "coal, coke and briquettes" (+40.2%), "artificial resins and plastic materials" (+15.0%), "petroleum, petroleum products and related materials" (+12.3%) and "machinery" (+10.6%). As for outward port cargo, double-digit changes were recorded in the tonnage of "pulp and waste paper" (+42.7%), "logs and timber; wood, simply worked" (+34.8%), "metalliferous ores and metal scrap" (+17.9%), "artificial resins and plastic materials" (+11.7%) and "stone, sand and gravel" (-21.8%).
Containers
In the second quarter of 2017, the port of Hong Kong handled 5.37 million TEUs of containers, representing an increase of 10.3% compared with a year earlier. Within this total, laden and empty containers increased by 9.6% and 14.4% to 4.59 million TEUs and 0.79 million TEUs respectively. Among laden containers, inward and outward containers increased by 9.4% and 9.8% to 2.40 million TEUs and 2.19 million TEUs respectively.
For the first half of 2017, the port of Hong Kong handled 10.25 million TEUs of containers, representing an increase of 11.5% compared with a year earlier. Within this total, laden and empty containers increased by 12.3% and 6.5% to 8.81 million TEUs and 1.44 million TEUs respectively. Among laden containers, inward and outward containers increased by 13.0% and 11.7% to 4.57 million TEUs and 4.24 million TEUs respectively.
On a seasonally adjusted quarter-to-quarter comparison, laden container throughput decreased by 1.7% in the second quarter of 2017. Within this total, inward and outward laden containers decreased by 2.7% and 0.7% respectively.
In the second quarter of 2017, seaborne and river laden containers increased by 11.4% and 5.0% compared with a year earlier to 3.39 million TEUs and 1.19 million TEUs respectively.
Within inward laden containers, imports decreased by 0.1% in the second quarter of 2017 compared with a year earlier to 0.71 million TEUs, while inward transhipment increased by 14.1% to 1.68 million TEUs. For outward laden containers, exports decreased by 0.3% to 0.61 million TEUs, while outward transhipment increased by 14.3% to 1.58 million TEUs.
In the first half of 2017, seaborne and river laden containers increased by 15.2% and 5.1% compared with a year earlier to 6.49 million TEUs and 2.33 million TEUs respectively.
Within inward laden containers, imports and inward transhipment increased by 5.3% and 16.6% in the first half of 2017 compared with a year earlier to 1.37 million TEUs and 3.20 million TEUs respectively. For outward laden containers, exports and outward transhipment increased by 3.8% and 15.0% to 1.18 million TEUs and 3.06 million TEUs respectively.
The detailed container statistics are summarised in Table 6.
Port cargo and laden container statistics are compiled from a sample of consignments listed in the cargo manifests supplied by shipping companies and agents to the C&SD.
Vessel arrivals
Comparing the second quarter of 2017 with the second quarter of 2016, the number of ocean vessel arrivals decreased by 4.0% to 6 806, while the total capacity increased by 6.3% to 107.6 million net registered tons. The number of river vessel arrivals increased by 2.2% to 40 132, with the total capacity also increasing by 9.5% to 30.6 million net registered tons.
Comparing the first half of 2017 with the first half of 2016, the number of ocean vessel arrivals decreased by 2.7% to 13 422, while the total capacity increased by 7.2% to 211.3 million net registered tons. The number of river vessel arrivals increased by 2.3% to 78 940, with the total capacity also increasing by 10.9% to 60.2 million net registered tons.
The statistics on vessel arrivals in Hong Kong are given in Table 7.
Vessel statistics are compiled by the Marine Department primarily from general declarations submitted by ship masters and authorised shipping agents. Pleasure vessels and fishing vessels plying exclusively within the river trade limits are excluded.
