Cluster of Multi-drug Resistant Acinetobacter cases in Queen Elizabeth Hospital

The following is issued on behalf of the Hospital Authority:

     The spokesperson for Queen Elizabeth Hospital (QEH) made the following announcement today (August 30):
 
     Five patients (aged 64 to 88) of a male medical ward have been confirmed as having Multi-drug Resistant Acinetobacter (MDRA) since August 18 without clinical symptoms. One of them has been transferred to Kowloon Hospital for medical surveillance and isolation with stable condition. Another patient was discharged upon recovery, while the remaining three have passed away due to underlying diseases.
 
     The Hospital Infection Control Team has discussed with experts of the Centre for Health Protection to enhance infection control measures according to prevailing guidelines, and will continue to closely monitor the patients of the ward.
 
     The cases have been reported to the Hospital Authority Head Office and the Centre for Health Protection.
