Public library users encouraged to print less and go green

     The Hong Kong Public Libraries (HKPL) today (August 17) encouraged library computer users to reduce the amount of printing in a bid to go green. Computer users are advised to store and share data files via their own USB drives or by other electronic means to avoid making excessive printouts. The public libraries regularly organise workshops to introduce means of electronic document storage such as cloud storage.

     The HKPL is determined to provide a wide range of services. In addition to the popular lending services and extension activities, Computer and Information Centres/Areas are also set up inside certain public libraries in various districts. The public can make use of the workstations to conduct research or access the library's electronic resources to meet their needs in learning and leisure reading.

     At present, a total of 30 Computer and Information Centres/Areas are in service across the territory. All workstations are connected to the Internet and have commonly used software installed (including applications for word processing, spreadsheets, databases and presentations). Additional applications are available in certain workstations to facilitate web authoring, photo editing, drawing and graphic design. The computer services and some related facilities (such as scanners) are provided free of charge, while charges for the workstation printing service are set in accordance with the "user pays" principle.
