SLW starts visit programme in Cambodia (with photos)
****************************************************
The Secretary for Labour and Welfare, Dr Law Chi-kwong, started his visit programme in Cambodia today (August 10) together with the Commissioner for Labour, Mr Carlson Chan, and his delegation.

In the morning, Dr Law met with the Minister of Labour and Vocational Training of Cambodia, Dr Ith Samheng, to discuss co-operation opportunities under the Belt and Road Initiative and exchange views on various labour and manpower issues, including following up on enabling Cambodians to work as domestic helpers in Hong Kong. They held a joint media session afterwards.

"There are now over 361 000 foreign domestic helpers (FDHs) in Hong Kong. Their contributions to the social and economic development of Hong Kong are fully recognised by our community. With our soon-to-peak manpower supply and ageing population, it is expected that we will have strong demand for FDHs. We welcome Cambodians to work in Hong Kong as domestic helpers," Dr Law said.

Dr Law later met with representatives of six recruitment agencies authorised by the Ministry of Labour and Vocational Training of Cambodia to learn about their preparatory work in arranging Cambodian domestic helpers to work in Hong Kong. Dr Law said FDHs in Hong Kong enjoy the same statutory protection under Hong Kong's labour law. He also briefed them on the regulations of employment agencies in Hong Kong, including the limit on how much agencies are allowed to charge job-seekers.

In the afternoon, Dr Law paid a courtesy call on the Chinese Ambassador to Cambodia, Mr Xiong Bo, to update him about the recent developments in Hong Kong. In the evening, Dr Law will attend and give a speech at a gala dinner co-organised by the Hong Kong Economic and Trade Office in Singapore and the Hong Kong Business Association of Cambodia in celebration of the 20th anniversary of the establishment of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region.

Dr Law and his delegation will continue the visit tomorrow (August 11) and return to Hong Kong at night.
