Some 250 guests attended a gala dinner in Tokyo, Japan, today (July 5) organised by the Hong Kong Economic and Trade Office (Tokyo) to celebrate the 20th anniversary of the establishment of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (HKSAR).

Speaking to guests from various sectors including the Japanese political and business circles, academia, the media and community groups, the Principal Hong Kong Economic and Trade Representative (Tokyo), Ms Shirley Yung, illustrated the substantive progress made by Hong Kong in the past two decades in various areas, including infrastructural development, trade and commerce, finance, professional services, tourism and people-to-people exchanges.

"While there has been much progress and development in the past 20 years, there are things that have remained unchanged. Hong Kong has remained a free and open city, and a dynamic hub for business from all around the world. The cosmopolitan nature of our city and its people has also remained unchanged," Ms Yung said.

On the relationship between Hong Kong and Japan, Ms Yung said that the theme of the 20th anniversary celebration, "Together · Progress · Opportunity", could also describe Hong Kong's ties with Japan.

"Hong Kong will continue to be a reliable and strategic partner for Japan. Together, we will look out to the world and seize the emerging opportunities," Ms Yung said.

The gala dinner was part of the series of events in Japan to celebrate the 20th anniversary of the establishment of the HKSAR. The dinner served a specially designed menu using Japanese ingredients and featuring aspects of the Western and Chinese culinary cultures. It was paired with Japanese sake and wine, reflecting the characteristics of Hong Kong as a cosmopolitan city and a fascinating blend of East and West.

The Hong Kong Drum Ensemble and award-winning young Hong Kong pianist Aristo Sham were invited to perform at the dinner to showcase Hong Kong's talents as well as promote arts and cultural exchanges between Hong Kong and Japan.
