Hong Kong chefs leave Berlin's taste buds tantalised (with photos)
******************************************************************
As a highlight in a series of activities in celebration of the 20th anniversary of the establishment of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (HKSAR), the Hong Kong Economic and Trade Office, Berlin (HKETO Berlin) hosted a gala dinner on June 27 (Berlin time) in Berlin to showcase the city’s exquisite diversity as well as the excellent quality Hong Kong has to offer as a culinary paradise. About 200 guests attended the dinner, amongst them were the Chinese Ambassador to Germany, Mr Shi Mingde, senior government officials from German Federal Government and Berlin city government, as well as leading figures from the business, cultural and media sectors.

The evening featured special Hong Kong cuisines prepared by culinary masters of the Chinese Culinary Institute (CCI) and their students, flying all the way from Hong Kong. CCI was established in the year 2000 aiming at raising the standards of Chinese cuisine in Hong Kong, improving the qualifications and status of the chefs, as well as promoting and maintaining the city’s gastronomic traditions.

In her welcoming speech at the dinner, the Director of  HKETO Berlin, Ms Betty Ho, highlighted Hong Kong's reputation as a destination for food lovers. "Home to more than 40 restaurants that have earned at least one coveted Michelin star, Hong Kong is hailed as Asia's culinary capital and an international food paradise. Our love of food from both Eastern and Western cultures has shaped Hong Kong’s distinct culinary scene – one that not only upholds time-honoured traditions, but also embraces modern innovations," Ms Ho said.

This special calibre of Hong Kong people to build on existing strengths and at the same time look forward to turn challenges into opportunities is mirrored in Ms Ho's review of Hong Kong's achievements of the past 20 years: "The steady development of Hong Kong in the past 20 years sprouts from the bedrock of 'one country, two systems'. Consolidating our achievements in the past 20 years, Hong Kong people will continue to stay together, progress further, and embrace the opportunities ahead."

Ms Ho's speech was followed by a delightful musical performance, featuring four gifted young talents from Hong Kong who are currently studying in Europe: Janice Lui and Hoi Yan-lok played the violins; Lam Lik-hin the viola; and Zhou Cheng-lam the cello.

To celebrate the 20th anniversary, HKETO Berlin will also host gala dinners in Geneva together with the HKETO Geneva on June 30, and in Budapest on July 5 to introduce Hong Kong culinary delights to European friends.
