Fireworks display, exhibitions and street carnival among highlights of HKSAR 20th anniversary celebrations (with photos)
******************************************************************************************
A fireworks display, the launches of two major exhibitions and a street carnival are among the top celebration events next week for the 20th anniversary of the establishment of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (HKSAR).

To celebrate the anniversary, nearly 40,000 pyrotechnic shells will be fired from five barges in Victoria Harbour on July 1 (Saturday). The 23-minute fireworks spectacular will start at 8pm and consist of eight scenes.

The show will include the 20th anniversary celebration theme song as well as brilliant displays of "China HK", the number "20" and the bauhinia flower. The iconic Hong Kong song "Under the Lion Rock" will be played while red heart-shaped smiley faces are displayed. There will also be dancing butterflies along with LED animations on the glass wall of the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre. For enquiries on the fireworks display, please call 2591 1340.

Members of the public are encouraged to go to the event by public transport. For more information on traffic and route diversions, please refer to the notice to be released by the Transport Department later.

More than 200 representative exhibits of the Palace Museum will be featured at the exhibition "The Hong Kong Jockey Club Series: Hall of Mental Cultivation of The Palace Museum - Imperial Residence of Eight Emperors", showing the Hall's political, historical and cultural importance in the history of the Qing dynasty.

The Hall of Mental Cultivation (Yangxin Dian) was the living place of the Qing emperors and the political centre of the Qing dynasty. It is one of the most visited places in the Palace Museum. As the Hall is closed for large-scale renovation, a selection of artefacts previously housed in the Hall will be exhibited on tour for the first time.

The exhibition is jointly presented by the Leisure and Cultural Services Department (LCSD) and the Palace Museum, and will run from June 29 (Thursday) to October 15 at the 1/F Thematic Exhibition Hall of the Hong Kong Heritage Museum in Sha Tin. The opening hours will be 10am to 6pm on Monday and Wednesday to Friday and 10am to 7pm on Saturday, Sunday and public holidays, and it will be closed on Tuesdays (except public holidays).

The admission fees are as follows:
  • Standard: $20, Group: $14 and Concession: $10
  • Combined ticket with the exhibition "The Hong Kong Jockey Club Series: Longevity and Virtues: Birthday Celebrations of the Qing Emperors and Empress Dowagers" at the Hong Kong Museum of History: Standard: $30, Group: $21 and Concession: $15

This collection from the Palace Museum will showcase the ritual system related to the birthday celebrations of the Qing emperors and empress dowagers, and the rich culture of ancient Chinese birthday celebrations will also be presented.

Members of the public can visit the exhibition from July 2 (Sunday) to October 9 at the Special Exhibition Gallery and 1/F Main Lobby of the Hong Kong Museum of History in Tsim Sha Tsui. It will be open from 10am to 6pm on Monday and Wednesday to Friday and from 10am to 7pm on Saturday, Sunday and public holidays, and will be closed on Tuesdays (except public holidays).
