Hong Kong Customs seizes suspected smuggled used smartphones (with photos)

     Hong Kong Customs yesterday (June 2) seized a total of 2 068 suspected smuggled used smartphones with an estimated market value of about $4.5 million at Lok Ma Chau Control Point and Man Kam To Control Point.

     Customs Officers conducted anti-smuggling operation and intercepted two outgoing container trucks and one outgoing private car yesterday. After inspection, 785 used smartphones and 595 used smartphones were seized from the false compartment of the private car and the container truck at Lok Ma Chau Control Point respectively, and 688 used smartphones from the false compartment of the container truck at Man Kam To Control Point. During the operation, Customs arrested three male drivers aged from 27 to 56. The vehicles involved were detained for further investigation. Investigation is ongoing.

     Smuggling is a serious offence. Under the Import and Export Ordinance, any person found guilty of importing or exporting unmanifested cargo is liable to a maximum fine of $2 million and imprisonment for seven years.
