Film Archive to hold six free screenings of Jin Yong films (with photos)
************************************************************************
To complement the opening of the Jin Yong Gallery at the Hong Kong Heritage Museum, the Hong Kong Film Archive (HKFA) of the Leisure and Cultural Services Department will present the programme "Film x Literature: The Touch of Gold - Jin Yong & Hong Kong Cinema", screening six Jin Yong films to pay homage to the great artist. Screenings will be held free of charge at the HKFA Cinema during June and July as part of the special activities of the Muse Fest HK 2017.

Louis Cha, better known by his pen name Jin Yong, was actually a filmmaker who penned scripts under the pseudonym Lin Huan and wrote his first script in 1953 before his first novel "The Book and the Sword", serialised in 1955, was a breakthrough. In 1958, he started to sit on the director's chair.

The feature films to be screened include "The Peerless Beauty"(1953), a film based on Jin Yong's debut script and tailor-made for the screen goddess Hsia Moon, and "Bride Hunter" (1960), the Shaoxing opera film he co-directed with Hu Siao-fung. The other four are adaptations of his novels: "Story of the Vulture Conqueror" (Parts One and Two, 1958-59) and "Ashes of Time Redux" (2008) from "The Eagle Shooting Heroes", and "The Proud Youth" (1978) and "Swordsman II" (1992) from "The Smiling, Proud Wanderer".

Admission to the screenings is free with tickets being distributed at the enquiry counter of the HKFA from now on. The counter is open on Mondays and from Wednesdays to Sundays from 10am to 8pm. Each person can receive up to two tickets per each screening on a first-come, first-served basis while stocks last.

Film critic Po Fung and the Assistant Curator I (Research and Editorial) of the HKFA, Ms May Ng, will host post-screening talks in Cantonese after the screenings of "The Peerless Beauty" and "Swordsman II".

"The Peerless Beauty" is in Mandarin with English subtitles, "Bride Hunter" is in Shanghainese dialogue with Chinese subtitles, "Story of the Vulture Conqueror" (Parts One and Two) is in Cantonese with no subtitles, "Ashes of Time Redux" and "Swordsman II" are in Cantonese with Chinese and English subtitles and "The Proud Youth" is in Mandarin with Chinese and English subtitles.
