Cluster of Group A Streptococcus bacteremia cases in Princess Margaret Hospital

The spokesperson for Princess Margaret Hospital made the following announcement today (May 26):
Two patients (aged 28 and 34) of a post-natal ward have been confirmed to have Group A Streptococcus bacteremia since May 16, with one of them regarded as a community acquired case. The two patients were treated with antibiotics and were fully recovered. Their neonates did not show any symptoms of Group A Streptococcus bacteremia. The two patients and their neonates were discharged on May 22.
As the occurrence of the cluster of infection is uncommon, the hospital has stepped up the infection control measures according to prevailing guidelines. All patients and staff in the concerned ward are under close medical surveillance.
The cases have been reported to the Hospital Authority Head Office and the Centre for Health Protection for necessary follow-up. The hospital will continue to closely monitor the situation of the concerned ward.
