SCED attends APEC MRT Meeting in Vietnam (with photos)

     The Secretary for Commerce and Economic Development, Mr Gregory So, attended the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) Ministers Responsible for Trade (MRT) Meeting in Hanoi, Vietnam today (May 20). 

     The Prime Minister of Vietnam, Mr Nguyen Xuan Phuc, welcomed all participating ministers before the meeting. Mr So took part in two discussion sessions themed "Fostering Sustainable, Inclusive and Innovative Growth and Strengthening Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises' Competitiveness and Innovation" and "Deepening Regional Economic Integration". He also attended an official working lunch to exchange views with other participating ministers on how APEC can continue to play a vital role to support the multilateral trading system and the World Trade Organization.

     Mr So said Hong Kong strongly supports the APEC's agenda of deepening and widening regional economic integration, and will continue working closely with APEC member economies in implementing the Lima Declaration on the Free Trade Area of the Asia-Pacific on the realisation of the Free Trade Area of the Asia-Pacific.

     He also pointed out that the multilateral trading system provides the most effective safeguard against protectionism. Hong Kong looks forward to joining hands with APEC member economies to advance the multilateral trade negotiations. 

     On the sidelines of the meeting, Mr So held a bilateral meeting with the Minister of Trade of Indonesia, Mr Enggartiasto Lukita, to exchange views on the Hong Kong, China – ASEAN Free Trade Agreement issues. He also met with the State Minister for Foreign Affairs of Japan, Mr Kentaro Sonoura, to exchange views Hong Kong’s trade and economic relations with Japan.

     Mr So will continue to join the MRT Meeting tomorrow (May 21).
