S for IT visits Kwai Tsing District (with photos)
*************************************************
The Secretary for Innovation and Technology, Mr Nicholas W Yang, visited Kwai Tsing District this afternoon (May 12), touring the Vocational Training Council (VTC)'s member institutions comprising the Hong Kong Institute of Vocational Education (IVE) and the Technological and Higher Education Institute of Hong Kong (THEi) in Tsing Yi and the South Kwai Chung Social Service Centre established by district personalities, as well as meeting with members of the Kwai Tsing District Council.

Accompanied by the Chairman of the Kwai Tsing District Council, Mr Law King-shing, and the District Officer (Kwai Tsing), Mr Alan Lo, Mr Yang arrived at the IVE and received a briefing by the Executive Director of the VTC, Mrs Carrie Yau. This was followed by a tour of the Robocon Workshop, the Geotechnical and Geo-environmental Laboratory and the STEM Education Centre.

The Robocon Workshop was developed as a teaching venue and game field for students who enter the Robocon Hong Kong Contest to design and build robots. Members of the Robocon Team are students of the Higher Diploma in Electrical Engineering and the Higher Diploma in Mechanical Engineering. While watching the Robocon Team practice using their robots in the Workshop, Mr Yang encouraged them to build up creativity, collaboration and problem-solving skills through the contest and unleash their full potential for careers in the innovation and technology sector in future.

At the Geotechnical and Geo-environmental Laboratory, the research teams presented a study of an "eco-garden" aiming to improve indoor and roadside air quality, as well as a super-hydrophobic self-cleaning paint based on waste marble powder. The paint, resistant to water, oil and dust, is now in the process of patent application and can be applied in the oil drilling and catering industries.

The STEM Education Centre, to be officially opened soon, will host workshops, competitions and seminars to boost STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics) education and nurture the entrepreneurial spirit of students. It is conducive to fostering a culture of innovation in the community.

The next stop was the South Kwai Chung Service Centre where Mr Yang chatted with elderly people. The centre is one of the participating organisations of the eHealth Care Project, which monitors the health conditions of the elderly and analyses data for follow-up care with the aid of technology. Mr Yang noted that healthy ageing is one of the key directions to address the needs of an ageing population. He said he hoped that the Innovation and Technology Fund for Better Living to be launched soon can inspire more caring people to adopt technology to tackle social issues, making life safer and more convenient and improving the well-being of specific groups such as the elderly, persons with disabilities and those with special needs.

Before concluding the district visit, Mr Yang met with members of the Kwai Tsing District Council to listen to their views on the wider application of innovation and technology.
