Outstanding youth and youth activities commended (with photos)
**************************************************************
The award presentation ceremony for the Outstanding Youth Commendation Scheme organised by the Home Affairs Bureau (HAB) and the Commission on Youth (CoY) was held today (March 11). Thirty-six young people were commended for their outstanding achievements in personal development, leadership and social services. Eighteen outstanding youth activities were also commended.

The Secretary for Home Affairs, Mr Lau Kong-wah, the Chairman of the CoY, Mr Lau Ming-wai and the Convenor of the Youth Programme Co-ordinating Committee, Mr Chan Pok-chi attended the ceremony to commend the awardees.

Mr Lau Kong-wah said, “The spirit of multi-faceted excellence which has been promoted among the young people is exemplified under the Outstanding Youth Commendation Scheme. Among the young people awarded today, we have rising stars in the fields of sports and arts as well as young people who are serving the community wholeheartedly.” He congratulated all the young awardees and encouraged them to inspire more young people to the task of striving upwards and building a better future for Hong Kong.

Mr Lau Ming-wai thanked the organisers for holding a wide variety of youth activities which have broadened their horizons, opened their minds and enriched their lives. He said the CoY would contemplate the future direction of youth development policy in Hong Kong in the coming period, and collect views from various sectors to carry out successful youth development work.

By giving recognition to outstanding young people, the commendation scheme aims to encourage young people to set targets for their personal development and to actively take part in community building and social services, thus setting an example for their fellow youngsters.

The young awardees were nominated by the 18 districts in the Open Category and the Secondary School Category. After two rounds of interviews, the judging panels selected the Star of the Stars of respective categories, the Top 10 Outstanding Youth as well as awardees of the Stellar Accomplishment Award, the Youth Leadership Award, the Social Service Award and the Personal Breakthrough Award.

The Outstanding Youth Activity Commendation Scheme was also organised to give recognition to innovative, purposeful and popular district youth programmes and encourage the organisation of more quality and effective activities to promote youth development in the districts. The scheme also serves as a platform where districts could learn from one another and further enhance their creativity in organising different kinds of youth activities benefiting the young people.

The award recipients of the 2016-17 Outstanding Youth Commendation Scheme and Outstanding Youth Activity Commendation Scheme are listed in the Annex.
