SCED speaks on tourism
**********************
Following is the transcript of remarks by the Secretary for Commerce and Economic Development, Mr Gregory So, at a media session on tourism after attending a radio programme today (February 24):

Reporter: Mr So, why did the Government decide to drop the Mega Events Fund? Is it because it is ineffective? And what would be the new approach?

Secretary for Commerce and Economic Development: I just said in Chinese that we have to acknowledge the contribution made by the Mega Events Fund in the past eight years. They have brought in new mega events into Hong Kong and enlarged the scale of the existing mega events. I want to acknowledge their contribution. But we are engaging in a different strategy now catering more to the specific needs of the tourism industry, and to have a whole spectrum of support that will be provided to these mega event organisers. The spectrum includes international events on the one hand and on the other hand something that is particular to the culture or unique attributes of Hong Kong. So in a new time, we deploy a new strategy to capitalise on all the advantages on what Hong Kong has to offer. Thank you.
