Hospital Authority announces senior appointments (with photos)

The following is issued on behalf of the Hospital Authority:

     The Hospital Authority (HA) spokesman announced the following senior appointments today (February 23).

     Dr Tom Kam-tim will take up the post of Cluster Chief Executive (Kowloon East) and Hospital Chief Executive (HCE) of United Christian Hospital with effect from November 1, 2017, succeeding Dr Chui Tak-yi upon his retirement.

     Dr Tom is a specialist in Internal Medicine and Community Medicine. He is currently the HCE of Tseung Kwan O Hospital (TKOH) and Haven of Hope Hospital (HHH), positions he has held since 2008 and 2016 respectively. Dr Tom is a seasoned senior executive with ample management experience working at corporate and cluster levels. He is also heavily involved in the capital works projects of Kowloon East Cluster, in particular the expansion and re-provisioning project of HHH. Dr Tom was instrumental in the building and commissioning of the Ambulatory Care Block in TKOH. He has also embarked upon a series of new programmes to increase service capacity and coverage including opening of the new Magnetic Resonance Imaging Centre, the Cardiac Catheterization Diagnostic and Interventional Centre and the Haemodialysis Centre, and transforming the hospital to become one of the HA's dedicated Day Surgery Centres.

     Dr Herman Lau, who is currently the HCE of Cheshire Home, Shatin (SCH), will take up the post of HCE of Shatin Hospital, Bradbury Hospice and SCH with effect from March 21, 2017. 

     Dr Lau, a physiotherapist by background, possesses over 18 years of management experience in healthcare service at hospital and cluster levels. Serving as HCE(SCH), he has led the hospital to accommodate transfers from Shatin Hospital as a measure to help relieve access blocks in New Territories East Cluster (NTEC). In addition to his HCE duties, Dr Lau's work portfolio also covers cluster service and annual planning, development and monitoring of cluster voluntary service, rehab shop, Health Resource Centre and cluster allied health service. As the Cluster Service Coordinator (Allied Health), he has facilitated the extension of allied health services to emergency wards in the acute hospitals of the cluster, and has introduced allied health service in Shatin Hospital and Tai Po Hospital on weekends and public holidays to ensure safe and early discharge of patients while coping with service demands during the winter surge.

     The HA Chairman, Professor John Leong, and the HA Chief Executive, Dr Leung Pak-yin, congratulated Dr Tom and Dr Lau on their new appointments and wished them every success in taking up the new posts.

     Professor Leong and Dr Leung also expressed appreciation for the contribution of Dr Chui Tak-yi in the public healthcare system over the years and his proficient leadership in Kowloon East Cluster. They wished Dr Chui a happy retirement.
