SED visits North District (with photos)
Accompanied by the District Officer (North), Mr Yau Kin-chung, Mr Ng first visited the North District Council and met with its Chairman, Mr So Sai-chi, and other District Council members to exchange views on education and district issues. He also took the opportunity to give an update on various education measures, including the quality kindergarten education policy to be implemented in the 2017/18 school year.
Mr Ng then visited the Jockey Club Fanling Integrated Children and Youth Services Centre operated by Hong Kong Children and Youth Services, where he was briefed on its comprehensive services for young people in the district. Mr Ng also chatted with youngsters participating in activities organised by the centre to learn more about their daily life and views on the future. He encouraged them to identify their interests and aspirations, and strive for their dreams and goals.
Mr Ng also visited the North District Centre of the 333 Learning Companion Leadership Programme at HHCKLA Buddhist Wisdom Primary School in Sheung Shui. The programme is aimed at helping primary school students from low-income families improve their academic performance, and training up secondary school students as assistant instructors to enhance their self-confidence and sense of responsibility, and promote positive emotional and psychological development.
Supported by the We R Family Foundation, the programme was launched in North District in 2010 and four centres have been set up so far. Apart from the one in North District, the other three centres are located in Kwun Tong, Sham Shui Po and Tin Shui Wai. More than 60 primary schools have participated in the programme, whereas 17 secondary schools have deployed their students to serve as assistant instructors. Over 800 students have benefited from the programme.
Mr Ng praised the local community services and took the view that the concerted efforts of the Government, schools, community organisations and members of the public could help promote the healthy development of children and young people.
