     The Secretary for Innovation and Technology, Mr Nicholas W Yang, paid a district visit to Kwun Tong this afternoon (November 25), meeting young innovation and technology talents at a mobile enterprise solutions company and receiving a briefing on smart city at the Energizing Kowloon East Office (EKEO).

     Accompanied by the Chairman of the Kwun Tong District Council (KTDC), Dr Bunny Chan, and the District Officer (Kwun Tong), Mr Gilford Law, Mr Yang first visited a mobile enterprise solutions company. The company management gave a presentation on its business model and how it helps corporate clients and the user community through mobile platform solutions. Mr Yang said innovation and technology provide young people with diversified career pathways, driving economic growth and shaping the world.

     At the EKEO, its Head, Ms Brenda Au, outlined the EKEO's plan to develop Kowloon East into a smart city district and its stage one public engagement for "Developing Kowloon East into a Smart City District - Feasibility Study". Under the study, the EKEO will formulate the smart city framework, and propose and prioritise smart city initiatives and the implementation strategy for Kowloon East.

     Mr Yang also visited the "Smart City in Smart Pod" exhibition at the EKEO, which highlights the latest trends in the concept and design of smart cities with examples of architecture, interior design, art and technology inside a futuristic aluminium mobile pod house.

     Mr Yang said that smart city is the ability for the Government and stakeholders to leverage on the latest Internet technologies to improve productivity and city management. The development of a smart city requires the collaboration of the whole community, including cross-sector co-operation and community engagement.

     The district visit was concluded with Mr Yang meeting members of the KTDC and listening to their views on district affairs and developments related to innovation and technology. Among the latter were innovation and entrepreneurship, the Technology Voucher Programme, e-payment, nurturing of talents and smart city development in Kowloon East.
