Service contract for fourth Community Green Station awarded (with photos)
*************************************************************************
The Environmental Protection Department (EPD) announced today (October 7) that, following an open tender, Hong Chi Association (HCA) has been appointed to operate the Yuen Long Community Green Station (CGS). The contract commenced today and will last for three years.

The Yuen Long CGS, which is the fourth CGS project completed, is located at the junction of Wetland Park Road and Tin Wah Road (the location map is at Annex). Subject to the completion of construction and other preparatory works, it is expected to commence operation in early 2017.

Under the contract, the HCA will provide a community collection service for various recyclables, which mainly comprise those of low value such as electrical appliances, glass containers, compact fluorescent lamps and tubes and rechargeable batteries, while a small amount of waste paper, waste plastic and waste metal may also be collected. The project will also include a variety of environmental education programmes to promote the messages of "Use Less, Waste Less" and "Clean Recycling" so that green living can take root at the community level.

An EPD spokesman said, "The HCA is a well-established organisation, with more than 50 years of experience in providing social services throughout Hong Kong. In addition, it has been funded by the Hong Kong Jockey Club Charities Trust to collect glass bottles in various districts since 2010. As of June 2016, over 4 200 tonnes of glass bottles had been collected. We are confident that the HCA has the ability and experience to provide recycling logistics support and organise various environmental education activities for the district community in Yuen Long.

"With more CGSs coming into operation, the Government will establish a network of CGSs with the dual functions of community recyclables collection and environmental education in the 18 districts, so as to implement various waste reduction initiatives."

The Sha Tin CGS and the Eastern CGS commenced operation in May and August 2015 respectively, while the Kwun Tong CGS is preparing to commence operation by the end of this year. The service contract of the Sham Shui Po CGS will be awarded at a later stage.

Information on the latest development of CGS projects can be found on the EPD website at www.wastereduction.gov.hk/en/community/cgs_intro.htm.
