The Government today (October 1) announced the appointment of Dr Lam Tai-fai as Chairman of the Board of Directors of Hong Kong Sports Institute Limited (HKSIL) with effect from April 1, 2017.

The term of appointment of the Chairman of the Board of Directors will be for two years from April 1, 2017, until March 31, 2019.

The Secretary for Home Affairs, Mr Lau Kong-wah, said, "I look forward to working closely with Dr Lam in furthering the development of elite sports in Hong Kong.

"With his extensive experience and well-proven credentials in serving on various public bodies, as well as his passion in promoting and supporting sports development, I am confident that Dr Lam will provide strong leadership for the work and development of the HKSIL," he said.

Mr Lau also highly commended and thanked the incumbent chairman, Mr Carlson Tong, for his dedication and contributions in steering and advancing elite sports development. Mr Tong joined the HKSIL Board in 2005 and has served as its Chairman since April 2012. During his tenure, he successfully led the HKSIL through the completion of its Redevelopment Project and also into the new phase of "whole person" development approach to support athletes at various stages of their sporting career.

The HKSIL was established on October 1, 2004. Its aim is to provide an environment in which sports talent can be identified, nurtured and developed to pursue excellence in the international sporting arena. Other than sports facilities, the support given to athletes includes elite coaching and training, sports science, sports medicine, strength and conditioning, athlete affairs and education, and applied research and sports information.
