Pan Asia Symphony Orchestra to perform with local young musicians
*****************************************************************
The Pan Asia Symphony Orchestra will collaborate with three promising local young musicians for three concerts entitled "The Young Person’s Guide to the Orchestra" in November. Under the baton and narration of guest conductor Johnny Ng, the orchestra and the young musicians will give audiences an introduction to various instruments through their accomplished performances.

The talented musicians - Chan Ka-hei (clarinet), Janice Leung (viola) and Wong Pui-ying (violin) - will join the orchestra in performing Britten's "The Young Person's Guide to the Orchestra, Op. 34". Other programmes include Mozart’s "Clarinet Concerto in A, K.622", Nováček's "Perpetual Motion" and Saint-Saëns' "Introduction and Rondo Capriccioso in A minor, Op. 28".

Founded by Dr Yip Wai-hong, the Pan Asia Symphony Orchestra is a highly organised ensemble which aims to promote music for the enjoyment of the general public, especially Hong Kong's younger generation. Through popular music and concert talks the orchestra has successfully introduced serious music and Chinese orchestral music to the public, bringing greater awareness of the city's indigenous culture.

The recipient of a conducting fellowship with the American Academy of Conducting at Aspen (AACA) in 2013, Johnny Ng made his debut with the AACA Orchestra in July the same year. Ng graduated from the Eastman School of Music in New York, studying viola under the tutelage of George Taylor. He received his master’s degree from the same school in 2012. He made an appearance with the Shanghai Quartet at the Carnegie Hall, New York, in 2013.

Now 16, Chan Ka-hei began learning clarinet at the age of 7. Last year he was awarded a fellowship diploma at Trinity College London. Chan has performed in Austria, Germany, the United States and the Mainland with the Hong Kong Children's Symphony Orchestra.

Janice Leung, aged 11, began learning viola at the age of 6 and has studied under Johnny Ng. With the help of Ng's meticulous training, Leung achieved grade 8 of the Associated Board of the Royal Schools of Music with distinction. In 2015, Leung toured with the Hong Kong Children's Symphony Orchestra to Austria. During the tour, she also served as Hong Kong’s cultural ambassador in cultural exchange activities with the Vienna Boys’ Choir.

Wong Pui-ying, aged 11, studied violin under Wong Chiu-tan and now studies with Lo Kwok-yan. She has received numerous awards including gold prize for violin solo in the Western music category of the 1st "Wuzhou Cup" instrumental competition held in Beijing in 2011, and champion in the final contest of the 2nd Hong Kong International Music Festival in 2015. In 2013, Wong performed the "Butterfly Lovers" violin concerto under the baton of renowned conductor Henry Shek.

"The Young Person's Guide to the Orchestra" is presented by the Leisure and Cultural Services Department. The concerts will be staged at 8pm on November 11 (Friday) at the Theatre of Sai Wan Ho Civic Centre, at 8pm on November 12 (Saturday) at the Theatre of Ngau Chi Wan Civic Centre and at 3pm on November 13 (Sunday) at the Auditorium of Tai Po Civic Centre.
