2016 Hong Kong-Macau Visual Art Biennale opens in Beijing (with photos)
***********************************************************************
The fifth edition of the Hong Kong-Macau Visual Art Biennale opened in the Beijing Minsheng Art Museum today (September 1). The Hong Kong exhibition for the Biennale displays new media artworks from nine local artists to explore the relationship between technology and art. The exhibition will be staged at Dunhuang and Zhengzhou after its first stop in Beijing.

Speaking at the opening ceremony, the Director of Leisure and Cultural Services, Ms Michelle Li, said that the Ministry of Culture has hosted the Hong Kong-Macau Visual Art Biennale since it was launched in 2008. The Government of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (HKSAR) is honoured to participate in the event to introduce artworks by Hong Kong artists to exhibition visitors on the Mainland.

She said that the Biennale is a major exhibition with collaboration by the Mainland, Hong Kong and Macau. The exciting interactive new media works created by nine Hong Kong participating artists explore the role of new technology in the art field and inspire reflections on human relationships in this era.

She expressed the hope that Hong Kong will continue to work together with Macau and the Mainland in the promotion and development of Chinese culture and heritage, to organise various types of cultural activities so as to broaden the audience's horizons and enrich the spiritual life of the public.

This year the Biennale has a theme of "Interactive Times". After its first stop at the Beijing Minsheng Art Museum until September 9, the exhibition will be staged at Dunhuang in Gansu as part of the first Silk Road (Dunhuang) International Cultural Expo from September 20 to October 8. It will then be moved to the Henan Art Museum in Zhengzhou from October 19 to 30.

Today interactive technology is not only applied to the production of art. It even changes the role of the audience and repositions viewers as doers. It fosters communication between people and unleashes the audience’s imagination. Through artworks including animation, projection displays and interactive installations, the exhibition explores the significance of interaction in the modern world.

The nine Hong Kong participating artists are Henry Chu, Tobias Gremmler, Max Hattler, Ip Yuk-yiu, Alan Kwan, Jeffrey Shaw, Sinan Goo, Tamas Waliczky and anothermountainman (Stanley Wong).

The 2016 Hong Kong-Macau Visual Art Biennale is hosted by the Ministry of Culture, the Home Affairs Bureau of the Government of the HKSAR and the Secretariat for Social Affairs and Culture of the Government of the Macau Special Administrative Region, with partners including the Leisure and Cultural Services Department of the Government of the HKSAR, the Cultural Affairs Bureau of the Government of the Macau Special Administrative Region, the Gansu Provincial Department of Culture and the Henan Provincial Department of Culture. It is presented by the China Arts and Entertainment Group and the China International Exhibition Agency, and co-ordinated by the Art Promotion Office (APO) of the Government of the HKSAR, the City University of Hong Kong Centre for Applied Computing and Interactive Media and the Macau Designers Association.
