Lantern carnivals to celebrate Mid-Autumn Festival (with photos)

     The Leisure and Cultural Services Department (LCSD) will present a wide range of activities including festive lantern carnivals and lantern displays to celebrate the coming Mid-Autumn Festival. Admission to all activities is free.
 
     A thematic lantern display entitled "Fly Me to the Moon" will be held at the pools outside the Hong Kong Space Museum from tomorrow (September 2) to September 25 featuring festive lantern displays of lovely animals flying to the moon and meeting traditional legendary characters there such as Chang'e, Wu Gang and the Jade Rabbit.
 
     Three lantern carnivals showcasing a variety of entertainment will be held at Victoria Park on September 15, at Tin Shui Wai Park and Ginza Square on September 16, and at Tai Po Waterfront Park on September 17. Details of the carnivals are as follows:
 
1. Urban Mid-Autumn Lantern Carnival
    September 15 (Thursday), 8pm to 11pm
    Victoria Park
    Programme: Spectacular Chinese ethnic dances and songs, acrobatics, a fire dragon dance parade,
                        demonstrations of Guangdong and Hong Kong folk crafts, a marching band performance,
                        music and dance performances, a magic show, a creative market and a lantern quiz.
    Lantern display period: September 14 to 18
 
2. New Territories West Mid-Autumn Lantern Carnival
    September 16 (Friday), 7.30pm to 10pm
    Tin Shui Wai Park and Ginza Square
    Programme: Spectacular Chinese ethnic dances and songs, acrobatics, demonstrations of Guangdong
                        and Hong Kong folk crafts, music and dance performances, an a cappella performance, 
                        a magic show, workshops, a wish-making corner and a lantern quiz.
Lantern display period: September 14 to 18
 
3. New Territories East Mid-Autumn Lantern Carnival
    September 17 (Saturday), 7.30pm to 10pm
    Tai Po Waterfront Park
    Programme: Spectacular Chinese ethnic dances and songs, acrobatics, demonstrations of Guangdong
                        and Hong Kong folk crafts, a Chinese orchestral music performance, music and dance
                        performances, rhythmic gymnastics, a piano DJ session, participatory activities, a wish-making
                        corner and a lantern quiz.
Lantern display period: September 14 to 18
 
     The Shaanxi Arts Troupe, supported by the Hong Kong, Macao and Taiwan Affairs Office of the Ministry of Culture, will perform spectacular folk songs, dances and acrobatic shows in the three carnivals. In addition, folk art demonstrations by Guangdong and local masters including beading embroidery, Chaozhou opera helmet making, Chinese gown making and "fa pai" (flower plaque) craftsmanship will also be featured.
 
     The carnival sites will each be decorated with beautiful lanterns. The Victoria Park carnival will showcase several festive lanterns, including an exhibition on traditional lanterns crafted by local masters and presented by the Intangible Cultural Heritage Office of the LCSD to show the traditional craftsmanship of lantern making. There will also be a thematic display entitled "It's All About Hong Kong", showcasing famous fairy tale figures including the Frog Prince and Cinderella visiting Hong Kong landmarks; a Mid-Autumn installation arts display by young visual artists; a Students' Lantern Design Display; and a "Splendid Taiwan" lantern, which has been displayed at the Taiwan Lantern Carnival 2016.
 
     A 5-metre-high revolving lantern together with beautiful butterfly lanterns will decorate Tin Shui Wai Park, while lanterns on display at Tai Po Waterfront Park will feature characters of "Alice in Wonderland" such as the Playing Cards, the Cheshire Cat and the White Rabbit to add festive joy to the carnival.
 
     Apart from lantern carnivals, the programme "Youth Night" will be held at the above venues one night after each carnival from 7.30pm to 9.30pm, showcasing the energy and creativity of young people with a variety of programmes.
 
     People are urged not to litter or burn wax while celebrating the festival.
