********************************************************
The Secretary for the Civil Service, Mr Clement Cheung, visited the Government Logistics Department (GLD) today (August 15) to learn more about the work of the department and to take the opportunity to meet its staff.

Accompanied by the Permanent Secretary for the Civil Service, Mr Thomas Chow, Mr Cheung first met with the Director of Government Logistics, Miss Mary Chow, and the directorate staff. He noted that the GLD is committed to providing bureaux and departments with professional, cost-effective and timely logistical support services in the areas of procurement and supplies, transport operation and management, and printing services.

While touring the Printing Supplies Unit of the Supplies Management Division, Mr Cheung learned that the Unit is mainly responsible for arranging quotation exercises for the purchase of goods and related printing services and providing logistics support to the Printing Division.

Mr Cheung then visited the Printing Unit and the Finishing Unit of the Printing Division and was briefed on their daily work. Equipped with eight printing machines, the Printing Unit carries out printing operations for various types of publications including books, leaflets and posters. The Finishing Unit conducts finishing operations for the publications and co-ordinates their delivery to bureaux and departments.

Mr Cheung also toured the Unallocated Store, which mainly keeps essential and emergency items. When bureaux and departments need the store items, the GLD will arrange for delivery.

Before concluding his visit, Mr Cheung met the staff representatives of various grades at a tea gathering to exchange views on issues of concern. He praised the efforts made by the staff and encouraged them to continue to provide customer-focused and quality service.
