Safe cycling enforcement operation starts
*****************************************

Police will conduct a one-week territory-wide enforcement operation on safe cycling from tomorrow (August 10) to raise public awareness on cycling safety.

To promote safe cycling messages to cyclists and the public, Police officers distributed publicity leaflets at various locations throughout the territory prior to the operation. During the operation, Police will take stringent actions against cycling offences to encourage safe cycling.

From January to June 2016, there were 983 traffic accidents involving bicycles, causing 1,012 casualties. When compared with 1,275 traffic accidents and 1,320 casualties in the same period of 2015, both figures decreased by 23 per cent. Six cyclists died in the accidents and five of them aged 59 and above, causing an increase of 50 per cent when compared with the same period of 2015.

Common cycling offences include riding on the pavement, failing to comply with traffic lights, signs or road markings, riding without the necessary lights at night or times of poor visibility, carrying another person or any animal or article which obstructs the cyclist's view.

The Police reminded members of the public that traffic accidents can be fatal and urged cyclists to obey road traffic regulations and pay attention to road safety.
