Research Grants Council to present public lecture on particle physics on July 30
********************************************************************************
The following is issued on behalf of the University Grants Committee:

The Research Grants Council (RGC) will present its second public lecture of this year under the theme "Particle Physics" on July 30 (Saturday) at the Hong Kong Science Museum.

The RGC has invited Professor Chu Ming-chung from the Department of Physics at the Chinese University of Hong Kong and the Principal Lecturer of the Department of Physics at the University of Hong Kong, Dr Jason Pun, to share their research findings and knowledge with the public. Details are as follows:

Time: 2.30pm to 4.30pm
Venue: G/F Lecture Theatre, Hong Kong Science Museum
Language: Cantonese
Admission is free on a first-come, first-served basis.

Since ancient times, the idea that all matter is made of indivisible atoms has been embraced by many philosophers and scientists. The properties of these atoms (or elementary particles in modern terminology) are therefore believed to be fundamental ingredients for understanding all physical phenomena in nature. The recent breakthroughs in elementary particle physics have marked the beginning of a golden era in fundamental physics. Professor Chu will give a lecture entitled "The quest for fundamental structures of matter" to introduce at an elementary level these achievements and their implications, as well as a range of new items that particle physicists search for.

Among all the elementary particles, neutrinos are the most abundant in quantity and yet the least understood. Many exciting discoveries on neutrinos have been made recently, and the properties of neutrinos have profound implications in particle physics, cosmology and astrophysics. Dr Pun will deliver a talk entitled "Studying the neutrinos - chasing after ghost particles" to introduce the tremendous efforts made by scientists to chase down these "ghost particles" and the latest results from the Daya Bay Reactor Neutrino Experiment.

Since 2009, leading scholars in their respective fields have been invited by the RGC to deliver public lectures. These lectures aim to arouse public interest in local research developments.
