Territory-wide operation to promote safe driving

     Police yesterday (June 28) concluded a five-day territory-wide operation to remind drivers of goods vehicles the importance of safe driving.
  
     This was the latest in an ongoing series of operations conducted by the Police using enforcement to target moving traffic offences with a view to reducing traffic accidents and maintaining smooth traffic flow.

     From January to May 2016, traffic accidents involving goods vehicle amounted to 1,359 accidents, involving 1,806 casualties. This accounted for 21 per cent and 23 per cent of the total accidents and casualties respectively.

     The operation resulted in the arrest of three drivers and the issue of 12 summonses and 1,925 fixed penalty tickets. Two good vehicles were suspected of violating safety requirements of the Road Traffic (Construction and Maintenance of Vehicles) Regulations and were sent to a Motor Vehicle Examination Centre for further investigation.
  
     Among the 1,937 summonses and fixed penalty tickets issued, 1,185 were issued for illegal parking, 137 for failing to comply with traffic signs, 115 for seatbelt-related offences, 108 for speeding, 81 for using hand-held mobile phone while driving, 37 for overloading, 15 for insecure load, nine for failing to comply with traffic light signals, and six for construction and maintenance offences.
