Director of Health attends tripartite meeting on Zika virus in Guangdong (with photo)

     The Director of Health, Dr Constance Chan, today (April 20) visited Guangdong to attend a tripartite meeting to discuss substantive progress in the prevention and control of Zika virus this year with Guangdong and Macau. She met with the Director of the Health and Family Planning Commission of Guangdong Province, Mr Chen Yuansheng, and the Deputy Director of the Health Bureau of Macau, Dr Cheang Seng Ip, as well as public health officials of the three places.

     Accompanying Dr Chan to the meeting, the Controller of the Centre for Health Protection (CHP) of the Department of Health (DH), Dr Leung Ting-hung, shared the prevention and control measures put in place in guarding Hong Kong against Zika virus. The DH, in consultation with the Food and Health Bureau, the Hospital Authority and experts of the CHP's Scientific Committee on Vector-borne Diseases, has reviewed and reinforced the strategy in formulating the local response to increasing number of areas with ongoing Zika virus transmission (affected areas). Public health actions include vector control, enhanced disease surveillance, laboratory testing, diagnosis and clinical guidelines, travel health advice and public education, enhanced port health measures, preparedness plan and risk communication.

     To date, 16 imported cases of Zika Virus Infection have been notified in the Mainland including 11 in Guangdong, seven of which transited in Hong Kong. At the meeting, the three places discussed measures on surveillance, prevention and control of Zika virus. It was reaffirmed at the meeting that co-operation among the three places should be continued and strengthened in the prevention and control of Zika virus while the ongoing mutual notification system of Zika cases should be maintained.

     In addition, the three places exchanged experience in childhood immunisation programmes.
