The Secretary for Justice, Mr Rimsky Yuen, SC, today (March 17) continued his visit in Shanghai.

At the 3rd Shanghai-Hong Kong Commercial Mediation Forum this morning, Mr Yuen delivered a keynote speech on the theme "The Past and Future Development of Mediation: The Hong Kong Experience". He shared with participants the reasons for promoting mediation in Hong Kong, the challenges involved and the future developments.

Mr Yuen said that the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region Government is committed to promoting Hong Kong as a centre for international legal and dispute resolution services in the Asia-Pacific region. He said he believed that mediation organisations in Shanghai and Hong Kong would be able to seize the opportunities by providing more professional and specialised services, combining the strengths of the two places, and seizing the opportunities arising from national and global developments.

Jointly organised by the Shanghai Commercial Mediation Center, the Joint Mediation Helpline Office and the Hong Kong Mediation Council, the forum provides a platform for mediation organisations in Shanghai and Hong Kong to explore different models of commercial mediation and to exchange views and information on the latest developments of mediation services in the two places.

Before attending the forum, Mr Yuen met with the Vice Chairman of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference Shanghai Committee, Mr Xu Yibo, to exchange views on the latest developments and co-operation between Shanghai and Hong Kong.

He met with the Deputy Director of the Shanghai Municipal Bureau of Justice, Mr Wang Xie, in the afternoon to discuss matters of mutual interest including legal co-operation between Hong Kong and Shanghai.

Mr Yuen will return to Hong Kong tonight.
