Key statistics on business performance and operating characteristics of the transportation, storage and courier services sector in 2014

     According to the results of the 2014 Annual Survey of Economic Activities - Transportation, Storage and Courier Services Sector released today (November 30) by the Census and Statistics Department (C&SD), the transportation, storage and courier services sector's total receipts (comprising business receipts and other income) amounted to $521.8 billion in 2014, representing an increase of 4.4% compared with 2013; on a per establishment basis, total receipts increased by 6.0% over 2013 to $20.8 million in 2014.

     Operating expenses and compensation of employees of this sector altogether amounted to $458.3 billion in 2014, representing an increase of 3.3% over 2013; on a per establishment basis, they increased by 4.8% compared with 2013 to $18.3 million in 2014.

     Gross surplus of the sector, which is equal to total receipts less operating expenses and compensation of employees, increased by 13.7% compared with 2013 to $63.5 billion in 2014; on a per establishment basis, gross surplus increased from $2.2 million in 2013 to $2.5 million in 2014. Gross surplus accounted for 12.2% of total receipts of this sector in 2014, up by 1.0 percentage point compared with 2013.

     Value added of the sector, which is a measure of its contribution to Hong Kong's Gross Domestic Product, increased by 12.0% compared with 2013 to $135.3 billion in 2014; on a per establishment basis, the value added was $5.4 million in 2014, which increased by 13.7% compared with 2013.

     According to the survey results, it was estimated that the sector comprised some 25 100 establishments and engaged about 227 200 persons, or an average of 9.1 persons per establishment, in 2014.

     Within the transportation, storage and courier services sector, the five largest industry groupings in terms of value added in 2014 were (1) air transport and service activities incidental to air transportation; (2) land passenger transport; (3) other transportation support activities; (4) land freight transport; and (5) cross-border water transport. They together accounted for 84.1% of the value added of the sector.

     In the air transport and service activities incidental to air transportation industry, total receipts amounted to $154.0 billion while operating expenses and compensation of employees totalled $125.8 billion in 2014. Gross surplus increased from $21.8 billion in 2013 to $28.2 billion in 2014, accounting for 18.3% of total receipts in 2014. Value added increased by 19.7% compared with 2013 to $54.7 billion.

     In the land passenger transport industry, total receipts amounted to $49.8 billion while operating expenses and compensation of employees totalled $35.1 billion in 2014. Gross surplus increased from $13.7 billion in 2013 to $14.7 billion in 2014, accounting for 29.4% of total receipts in 2014. Value added increased by 5.2% over 2013 to $27.5 billion.

     In the other transportation support activities industry which comprised mainly cargo forwarders and shipbrokers, total receipts amounted to $126.8 billion while operating expenses and compensation of employees totalled $121.4 billion in 2014. Gross surplus decreased from $6.2 billion in 2013 to $5.3 billion in 2014, accounting for 4.2% of total receipts in 2014. Value added decreased by 2.3% compared with 2013 to $14.3 billion.

     In the land freight transport industry, total receipts amounted to $19.6 billion while operating expenses and compensation of employees totalled $17.2 billion in 2014. Gross surplus increased from $2.0 billion in 2013 to $2.5 billion in 2014, accounting for 12.5% of total receipts in 2014. Value added increased by 11.5% over 2013 to $8.8 billion.

     In the cross-border water transport industry, total receipts amounted to $108.3 billion while operating expenses and compensation of employees totalled $106.7 billion in 2014. Gross surplus amounted to $1.6 billion in 2014, same as that in 2013 and accounting for 1.5% of total receipts in 2014. Value added increased by 33.7% compared with 2013 to $8.5 billion.
