****************************************

The Chief Secretary for Administration, Mrs Carrie Lam, today (September 21) visited Sha Tin District to get a better grasp of the district's development and community concerns. She also had a tea gathering with young people in the district.

Accompanied by the Chairman of the Sha Tin District Council, Mr Ho Hau-cheung; the District Officer (Sha Tin), Ms Cora Ho; and the Deputy Project Manager (New Territories East) of the Civil Engineering and Development Department, Mr Wong Wai-man, Mrs Lam toured the vicinity of the Shing Mun River Promenade and the Tai Wai Nullah to inspect the proposed sites for the Signature Project Scheme (SPS) in Sha Tin. The SPS in Sha Tin comprises two projects, namely the Revitalisation of Shing Mun River Promenade near Sha Tin Town Centre and the Decking of Tai Wai Nullah in Sha Tin. The former aims to enhance bridges, improve signage and create space along the promenade, while the latter involves building a multi-purpose deck over the Tai Wai Nullah to create more space to complement the sustainable development of the community. Mrs Lam said she hopes the two projects can bring a new look and add vibrancy to Sha Tin District.

Mrs Lam then met with members of the Sha Tin District Council and listened to their views on issues of concern in the district, including development and housing, traffic and transport, environmental hygiene, building management, medical services, youth development, community facilities and district administration.

Before concluding the visit, Mrs Lam had a tea gathering at the Sha Tin Town Hall Exhibition Gallery with the youths participating in the short-term vocational exposure programmes in Sha Tin during summer. She chatted with the young people to learn more about their work experience. Mrs Lam said she was pleased to know that the young people have opportunities to try out work in different sectors such as commerce and industry, social services and public administration. She expressed that the Government attaches great importance to youth development and will continue to co-ordinate and promote youth work through the District Offices. She also encouraged the youths to pursue their dreams.
