Judicial appointments

The following is issued on behalf of the Judiciary:

     The Judiciary today (September 16) announced three judicial appointments covering the High Court and the District Court.

     The appointments include two Justices of Appeal of the Court of Appeal of the High Court and the Principal Family Court Judge. All appointments are made by the Chief Executive on the recommendation of the Judicial Officers Recommendation Commission. The appointment of two Justices of Appeal of the Court of Appeal of the High Court will take effect from September 21, 2015, and the appointment of the Principal Family Court Judge will take effect from September 17, 2015.

Justices of Appeal of the Court of Appeal of the High Court

     Mr Justice Jeremy Poon Shiu-chor and Mr Justice Derek Pang Wai-cheong are appointed as Justices of Appeal of the Court of Appeal of the High Court.

Principal Family Court Judge
----------------------------

     Judge Bruno Chan is appointed as the Principal Family Court Judge.

     The biographical notes of the appointees are as follows:

Mr Justice Jeremy Poon Shiu-chor

     Mr Justice Poon was born in Hong Kong in 1962. He obtained LL.B and P.C.LL from the University of Hong Kong in 1985 and 1986 respectively. He acquired LL.M from the University College London in the United Kingdom in 1987. He was called to the Hong Kong Bar in 1986 and was in private practice between 1988 and 1993. He joined the Judiciary as Magistrate in 1993 and was appointed as Deputy Registrar, High Court in 1999 and as Judge of the Court of First Instance of the High Court in 2006.

Mr Justice Derek Pang Wai-cheong

     Mr Justice Pang was born in Hong Kong in 1961. He obtained LL.B. from the University of East Anglia in the United Kingdom in 1985. He passed the Bar Finals Examination of the Inns of Court School of Law in the United Kingdom in 1986. He obtained a Master Degree in Public Administration from the University of Hong Kong in 1990 and LL.B. from Peking University in 1995. He was called to the Bar in England and Wales and in Hong Kong in 1986 and 1987 respectively. He joined the then Legal Department as Crown Counsel in 1987, and was promoted to Senior Crown Counsel and Deputy Principal Crown Counsel in 1989 and 1996 respectively. He was appointed as District Judge in 2000 and as Judge of the Court of First Instance of the High Court in 2009.

Judge Bruno Chan

     Judge Chan was born in Hong Kong in 1952. He obtained a Bachelor of Arts Degree from Washington University in the United States in 1975. He passed the Law Examination Part I and II of the Law Society of Hong Kong between 1977 and 1979. He was admitted as a Solicitor in Hong Kong in 1982 and was in private practice between 1982 and 1995. He was appointed as District Judge in 1995.
