The Secretary for Education (SED), Mr Eddie Ng Hak-kim, will today (May 18) leave Hong Kong for a two-day official visit to Guangzhou and Zhongshan with a view to strengthening the education ties and exchanges between Hong Kong and Guangdong Province.
Today Mr Ng will pay a courtesy call on officials of the Department of Education of Guangdong Province to exchange views on education issues of mutual concern, including an update on Hong Kong students furthering their studies in Mainland universities. Mr Ng will then visit Sun Yat-sen University and Jinan University and meet with some Hong Kong students studying there. He will take the opportunity to learn more about the students' campus life and give them encouragement.
Mr Ng will also pay a visit to the South Startup Service Center in Guangzhou to learn about the services it offers to young people from Hong Kong who are seeking to set up business on the Mainland.
Tomorrow Mr Ng will pay a courtesy call on officials of the Zhongshan Municipal Government to exchange views on educational co-operation.
Officers accompanying the SED to visit Guangzhou and Zhongshan will include the Deputy Secretary for Education, Dr Catherine K K Chan; Administrative Assistant to the SED, Mr Rick Chan; and Political Assistant to the SED, Mr Jeff Sze. During Mr Ng's absence from Hong Kong, the Under Secretary for Education, Mr Kevin Yeung, will be the Acting SED.
