Key statistics on operating characteristics of the information and communications, financing and insurance, professional and business services sectors in 2013

     The Census and Statistics Department (C&SD) released today (November 28) the results of the 2013 Annual Survey of Economic Activities - Information and Communications, Financing and Insurance, Professional and Business Services Sectors.

     Amongst these industry sectors, the financing (except banking) industry recorded the largest total receipts (comprising business receipts and other income) in 2013, followed by the banking and insurance industries. The other industry sectors in descending order in terms of total receipts were information and communications; administrative and support service activities; and professional, scientific and technical activities.

     In the financing (except banking) industry, total receipts amounted to $578.1 billion in 2013, representing a substantial increase of 53.9% compared with 2012. On a per establishment basis, total receipts increased by 52.6% compared with 2012 to $75.5 million in 2013. Operating expenses and compensation of employees together increased by 8.6% year-on-year to $194.8 billion in 2013. Gross surplus, which is equal to total receipts less operating expenses, compensation of employees and (where applicable) value of purchases of goods for sale, increased from $196.3 billion in 2012 to $383.3 billion in 2013, accounting for 66.3% of total receipts in 2013. Value added, which provides a measure of its contribution to Hong Kong's Gross Domestic Product (GDP), increased by 10.9% compared with 2012 to $71.2 billion in 2013. In 2013, the financing (except banking) industry comprised about 7 700 establishments and engaged about 76 900 persons, or an average of 10.0 persons per establishment.

     In the banking industry, total receipts amounted to $355.8 billion in 2013, representing an increase of 17.0% compared with 2012. On a per establishment basis, total receipts increased by 16.5% compared with 2012 to $1.4 billion in 2013. Operating expenses and compensation of employees together increased by 7.3% year-on-year to $173.8 billion in 2013. In 2013, the banking industry comprised 257 establishments and engaged about 100 200 persons, or an average of 389.7 persons per establishment.

     In the insurance industry, total receipts dropped marginally by 0.5% over 2012 to $328.4 billion in 2013. On a per establishment basis, total receipts decreased by 2.7% compared with 2012 to $128.9 million in 2013. Operating expenses and compensation of employees together increased by 8.2% year-on-year to $40.9 billion in 2013. In 2013, the insurance industry comprised about 2 500 establishments and engaged about 60 100 persons, or an average of 23.6 persons per establishment.

     In compiling gross surplus and value added of the banking and insurance activities, other data sources are required to supplement data collected through this survey and these statistics are compiled under the framework of GDP. Statistics on value added of the above activities compiled under the framework of GDP will be released in February 2015.

     In the information and communications sector, total receipts amounted to $176.6 billion in 2013, representing an increase of 10.0% compared with 2012. On a per establishment basis, total receipts increased by 2.9% compared with 2012 to $18.3 million in 2013. Operating expenses and compensation of employees together increased by 9.8% year-on-year to $121.2 billion in 2013. Gross surplus increased from $36.1 billion in 2012 to $39.5 billion in 2013, accounting for 22.4% of total receipts in 2013. Value added increased by 9.5% compared with 2012 to $74.7 billion in 2013. In 2013, the information and communications sector comprised about 9 700 establishments and engaged about 102 900 persons, or an average of 10.6 persons per establishment.

     In the administrative and support service activities sector, total receipts amounted to $138.7 billion in 2013, representing an increase of 3.7% compared with 2012. On a per establishment basis, total receipts decreased by 1.0% compared with 2012 to $11.6 million in 2013. Operating expenses and compensation of employees together increased by 3.2% year-on-year to $129.1 billion in 2013. Gross surplus increased from $8.3 billion in 2012 to $8.8 billion in 2013, accounting for 6.4% of total receipts in 2013. Value added increased by 5.1% compared with 2012 to $44.2 billion in 2013. In 2013, the administrative and support service activities sector comprised about 11 900 establishments and engaged about 215 700 persons, or an average of 18.1 persons per establishment.

     In the professional, scientific and technical activities sector, total receipts amounted to $121.7 billion in 2013, representing an increase of 3.2% compared with 2012. On a per establishment basis, total receipts decreased by 2.3% compared with 2012 to $4.9 million in 2013. Operating expenses and compensation of employees together increased by 2.7% year-on-year to $97.6 billion in 2013. Gross surplus increased from $22.2 billion in 2012 to $23.3 billion in 2013, accounting for 19.2% of total receipts in 2013. Value added increased by 3.7% compared with 2012 to $64.0 billion in 2013. In 2013, the professional, scientific and technical activities sector comprised about 24 700 establishments and engaged about 133 300 persons, or an average of 5.4 persons per establishment.
