As the Mid-Autumn Festival approaches, the Environmental Protection Department (EPD) encourages every family to cherish food and avoid wasting it while celebrating the festival. "Big Waster", a character who symbolises food wastage in the Food Wise Hong Kong Campaign, will show up in Mong Kok and Causeway Bay for two days starting tomorrow (September 14). His appearance will remind members of the public to enjoy a green Mid-Autumn Festival and not become another "Big Waster".
During the Mid-Autumn Festival, families and friends have meals together or celebrate with traditional food such as mooncakes. However, after the celebration, lots of food often remains uneaten, and together with food waste, will end up in the landfills. This not only causes wastage, but also increases the pressure at the landfills.
To further promote the message "Love Food, Waste Not", the EPD will set up a promotional booth at pedestrian zones in Mong Kok and Causeway Bay to call on the public to avoid generating food waste during the Mid-Autumn Festival and to donate excess food which is still fit for consumption to food recycling organisations.
Apart from meeting the "Big Waster", members of the public can also join the Food Wise tongue twister game and take photos with the "Big Waster" in front of a festive backdrop at the booth. Moreover, rapper Kevin Tong will perform the rap song featured in a promotional video of the Food Wise Hong Kong Campaign to remind the public to reduce food waste.
Event details are as follows:
Date Time Venue
September 14 4pm - 7pm Pedestrian zone at Sai
(Saturday) Yeung Choi Street South,

September 15 3pm - 6pm Pedestrian zone at

Additionally, in order to promote "Love Food, Waste Not" during the Mid-Autumn Festival, the EPD will arrange for the "Big Waster" to visit different venues and lantern carnivals during the festival.
The Food Wise Hong Kong Campaign is a territory-wide food waste reduction campaign launched in May this year. The campaign aims to encourage the whole community, including individuals, families and the commercial and industrial sectors to avoid and reduce food waste.
