Following is the transcript of remarks by the Secretary for the Environment, Mr Wong Kam-sing, after attending the special meeting of the Legislative Council Panel on Environmental Affairs today (July 26):
Reporter: ... There will be a consultancy study on the recycling rate as some of the recycling companies said hundreds of thousand tonnes of waste generated are classified as plastic waste. How do you respond to that?
Secretary for the Environment: The study is to look into the fluctuation of the plastic recyclables in Hong Kong throughout its life cycle. Regarding your question, I think the study will also touch upon that. But the key is that given the new initiative of Green Fence in the Mainland, actually that would help to make the whole situation healthier. Because under Green Fence, those not-so-good recyclables would not be purchased through Hong Kong into the Mainland, so that would help the overall situation and minimise the problem in Hong Kong.
