CE's statement on CE Election results
*************************************

Following is a statement by the Chief Executive, Mr Donald Tsang, today (March 25) on the results of the Chief Executive Election:

The Chief Executive Election is a significant milestone in the constitutional development of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region.  The smooth conclusion of today's election, in accordance with the Basic Law, is another important testament to the successful implementation of "One Country, Two Systems" and the principle of "Hong Kong People ruling Hong Kong".  I extend my warmest congratulations to Mr C Y Leung on his successful election.

I have submitted a report of the election results to the State Council of the Central People's Government, seeking its formal appointment of the fourth-term Chief Executive of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region.

My Administration and I will render every assistance to Mr Leung as he makes the necessary preparation for the new term of government, and will make every effort to ensure a seamless transition.  In this connection, the Office of the Chief Executive-elect has been set up and will begin operation formally tomorrow.

I should like to thank and pay tribute to Mr Henry Tang and Mr Albert Ho and their teams, for their dedicated efforts throughout the election process.  The Government has, as always, been encouraging residents to proactively and fully participate in public service, so as to build a solid foundation for Hong Kongˇ¦s democratic development. I look forward to their continued contribution to the community and through their future work to the further development of Hong Kong.

I call on the people of Hong Kong to join hands in giving full support to the Chief Executive-elect, towards a better future for all.
